This past week several members of my team and I travelled to the Eastern Vicariate to launch the 2025 Annual Diocesan Appeal. As I have told you before, one of my favorite things to do is to explore our Diocese. Every region, every parish, every school has a unique personality, and it energizes me to get out and experience this.
Among the sites I visited were St. Gregory the Great Catholic School, where they were celebrating Catholic Schools Week. SGGS is the largest Catholic School in our diocese, educating a diverse student body of JK4 through 8th grade. I also spent time at a few parishes – Prince of Peace in Chesapeake, Blessed Sacrament in Norfolk, and Star of the Sea in Virginia Beach.
I will say that while I felt most welcomed by all I encountered, I can only imagine what would have happened if I had brought Moose. Clearly, in some circles, I am best known as “Moose’s Mom.” And that’s okay!
While I saw people from many parishes, I got this fun picture with a group from St. Pius X. They are definitely in the Moose Keightley fan club!
On a somber note, I can’t close without mentioning the aviation disasters that occurred last week. The horrific accident on Tuesday night at Reagan National and Friday night’s tragic Medevac jet crash in Philadelphia make me so sad. Closer to home, Friday morning a kind, loving wife and mother of three was hit by a truck and killed as she was leaving an early morning exercise class. While I didn’t know her well, our children went to the same schools and I know her to be an amazing human being.
For all affected by these tragedies, for all who continue to recover from the fires in California and the hurricanes in Western NC and beyond, I send my prayers. I am looking forward to February bringing a few more minutes of daylight each day, and a few less catastrophes in the world.
God Bless,
Margaret
