FAQs About the Annual Diocesan Appeal
With our Diocese covering approximately 36,000 square miles in Virginia, we face many needs as a Church. One important way we can meet these needs is through the Annual Diocesan Appeal. Your faithful support of the Appeal enables our Diocese to more effectively meet the Church’s urgent annual needs, which serve as building blocks for growing the Church’s impact for years to come.
The Appeal helps fund cornerstone ministries that one parish cannot support alone. For instance, one parish could not support the room, board, and tuition assistance needs of our seminarians, supply over half a million dollars to parish food banks and Catholic organizations across our Diocese, or provide for diocesan-wide next-generation evangelization and formation initiatives. Additionally, through the parish-sharing formula of the Appeal, parishes receive a percentage of the funds collected, which they can use for their local priorities.
Every year, the Annual Diocesan Appeal aims to fund critical ministries and programs that make change today and leave a lasting impact tomorrow. A key part of making this happen is the Pastors’ Advisory Committee. Every fall, the committee receives a report from various diocesan ministry directors on their requests for the upcoming Annual Appeal. Directors explain their current requests and the specifics of how previous funds have been spent. This process ensures the committee can recommend a Case for Support and an overall fundraising goal that are responsive to the real needs facing our Catholic Church.
Each parish’s target is calculated based on the percentage of its overall offertory (Sunday collections) it receives each week.
Here is the formula:
Total FY25 offertory for parish ÷ Total FY25 offertory for diocese = Parish percentage of total offertory X Overall Appeal goal = Parish target
